Dan Fogelberg Dies of Cancer

Postby veetel » Mon Dec 17, 2007 8:10 am

"NEW YORK - Dan Fogelberg, the singer and songwriter whose hits "Leader of the Band" and "Same Old Lang Syne" helped define the soft-rock era, died Sunday at his home in Maine after battling prostate cancer. He was 56.

His death was announced Sunday in a statement by Anna Loynes of the Solters & Digney public relations agency, and was also posted on the singer's Web site.

"Dan left us this morning at 6:00 a.m. He fought a brave battle with cancer and died peacefully at home in Maine with his wife Jean at his side," it read. "His strength, dignity and grace in the face of the daunting challenges of this disease were an inspiration to all who knew him."

Fogelberg was found in 2004 to have advanced prostate cancer. In a statement then, he thanked fans for their support: "It is truly overwhelming and humbling to realize how many lives my music has touched so deeply all these years. ... I thank you from the very depths of my heart."

Fogelberg's music was powerful in its simplicity. He didn't rely on the volume of his voice to convey his emotions; instead, they came through in the soft, tender delivery and his poignant lyrics. Songs like "Same Old Lang Syne" - in which a man reminisces after meeting an old girlfriend by chance during the holidays - became classics not only because of his performance, but for the engaging storyline, as well."

This just floored me. I grew up with Dan's music. I cut my teeth learning guitar with Dan's music...I still have the songbooks. RIP Dan. Thank you. You were truly one of a kind.

He was a tremendous influence on my musical development also. But sadly, he'll be remembered mostly for his lamest songs, ironically the same ones that he had the most commercial success with. His Christmas album "The First Christmas Morning" is an absolute delight...I'll be playing it often these next two weeks.

"You've got to just follow your heart and do your best work.
For better or worse, I have followed my heart.
There is no doubt in my mind or heart that everything
I've done is exactly what I intended to do."

I realize that he did not write a few of these, Since You've Asked, Tell Me To My Face and Songbird, still his interpretations are superb.

Dan was a contributing artist to the soundtrack of my life. I was learning guitar at the time and I admired the way he crafted story songs. He and Jackson Browne and the Eagles were my favorites at the time and I wanted to write songs like that.

Dan Fogelberg got me through some tough times, being alone in strange countries while in the military. I could literally buy a new Dan Fogelberg album, sight unheard, and know that I would like the majority of the songs on it. I can't say that about a lot of artists.

I never got to see him perform live. My brother did and he still talks about that concert as though it were yesterday.

My favorite was The Innocent Age and I actually lived the lyrics of Same Old Lang Syne when I returned from overseas to help my mother recuperate from a heart attack. Windows and Walls is another one I'm fond of. By that time, his earlier commercial success was clearly behind him and I was back overseas where the music is different.

I got back to the USA for good in 1994 and would hear a Fogelberg song every once in a while. It was always like coming home.

And yes, the snow turned into rain.

Great list of songs, Dan W.
I have spent a lot of time in the past few days thinking of Dan, and there are five pages of thoughts and memories of Dan Fogelberg over on the Poco forum, many by me (as sunsetkidd). I also grew up with his music; this is a huge loss for me personally, and the world of music in general. right now I'm listening to many Fogelberg songs that I haven't heard in years.
I thank Dan Fogelberg for the difference he made in my life. The world is poorer with his absence.

It was a sad news this year as same as Hughie Thomasson of the Outlaws. Dan is one of my favorite. I couldn't see his live bacause he's never been to Japan. All his songs are shining like gems. Freebird Radio featured Dan for several days but now back to the normal rotation.
RIP.
